Resilience in Motion (website)
Third volume of Metropolis’ Insights on Metropolitan Governance. Resilience examined as a transformative urban framework through six scenarios every metropolis must prepare for, with the aim of future-proofing cities.
The six scenarios: City at 50 °C (how extreme heat turned cities into night-time economies), Cities underwater (how rising waters impacted how and where we live), Homes out of reach (how the quest for shelter redefined urban belonging), Trust on trial (how disinformation altered public trust in the digital city), Cities on the move (how migration transformed the urban century) and The care crunch (when ageing societies and unequal systems meet a crisis of compassion).
Each scenario starts from today’s evidence and projects how it could become a crisis or a catalyst: why it is possible, root causes, implications for metropolises and current responses, including no-regret actions. Together they work as a stress test for metropolitan systems and as foresight exercises for city teams: imagine the city within each future, then backcast.
The data visualisations were designed as responsive, interactive tools that make complex global datasets legible and comparable, built on open data from CRED/UCLouvain, the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, the OECD, the ILO, UN DESA, the World Bank and Our World in Data. The web version adds layers of data beyond the printed edition. Maps use the Equal Earth projection to reduce the areal distortion that conventional projections impose on countries in the Global South.
